The Aldeburgh

is a sister harp to our highly acclaimed Malvern concert harp. It has the same essential features such as our own special bell-metal cast soundbox ribs; enhanced shape of the extended soundboard; careful use of carbon fibre technology in key areas; mechanism plates that wont tarnish and are fitted with gold-plated discs, bridge-pins and forks.

The exquisitely turned pillar and gracefully shaped pedal-box and pillar base-plate, naturally combine both a classic and contemporary style.

The Aldeburgh has the full range of 47 strings, is strung with the
finest gut strings to the very top and it weighs just 31 kg (69 lbs).

All our 47 string pedal harps are fitted with front-foot castors. This makes it so much easier to move the harp around a room or stage.

David Watkins stated that the Aldeburgh is at least the equal of its sister harp the Malvern, which he described as "The finest pedal harp that has ever been made in Britain. It is much lighter than most concert harps and, this combined with an original body construction, has a range of sonority and dynamic that is quite remarkable. It's easy to play, has a smooth pedal action and is light to transport."

"The Aldeburgh is a superb new harp! The bottom of the soundboard extension is an innovative new idea and there is generous hand room at the top of this instrument."

Launched in 2009,
this harp is our tribute to Benjamin Britten, one of the greatest British composers. Britten moved to Aldeburgh in 1947 and remained there until he died in 1976. During that time, he & Peter Pears co-founded the now world famous Aldeburgh Festival for which he also composed many important works.

Britten once wrote of Aldeburgh.
'I have tried to bring music to it in the shape of our local festival; and all the music I write comes from it.'

Britten wrote a number of significant compositions for the Harp. Today, several of these are among the most important in a harpist's main repertoire; especially the
Ceremony of Carols and the Harp Suite. (These, and literally thousands of other titles are available from our music stock)
