Woods & Finishes

Maple
For the Skylark, Clarsach and Progress harps and commonly associated with harp manufacture. It is a straight-grained wood with remarkable strength characteristics and a blonde-white colour which also lends itself ideally to staining but not the waxed finish.

Ash
For the Ashdown. A resilient light-coloured wood with a well defined and attractive grain, particularly suited to the satin finish.

Mahogany
Also for the Ashdown. A beautiful and familiar red-brown wood. As with the Ash, this timber resonates particularly well with the lower tension strings.

Spruce Soundboards
Spruce is the wood that most characterises the tone of a harp; we are extremely particular in selecting the very finest quality spruce for the soundboard. The crucial aspects of sound and performance are otherwise directly attributable to the structural balance which is essentially a matter of design. Hence, your choice of finish and wood for the rest of the harp makes no significant difference in this respect.

Finishes
You can decide if you want your harp in Satin or Gloss Finish. In addition, we can customise decorative finishes, colours, paintings or carvings.

Satin finish is a modern lacquered finish, easier to maintain, which gives full protection to the wood whilst enhancing the grain to reveal it's natural beauty.

Gloss finish is a highly protective, polyester finish with a high-gloss sheen. It requires little or no maintenance to remain looking as good as new for years. However, in the event of a serious knock causing any damage, this is likely to be expensive to refurbish.

Colours: choose from the range of colours shown on the left.
