Halsway Folk Harp Weekend
Dive into the fantastic world of folk harp playing. Harpists are welcome to join us for a weekend of harp workshops and sessions with tutors Steph West and Merit Zloch. This is our first weekend of what we hope will be an annual weekend dedicated to harp playing in a folk context.
Using repertoire from the UK (with Steph) and Germany (with Merit) we’ll explore the music, arrangements and techniques for playing the harp in folk context.
The course will be taught by ear with notation available at the end of the weekend. You are welcome to bring your recording devices.
Who’s it For?
As a guide, this course is aimed at Grades 1-5 or equivalent. It’s not for complete beginners. At the lower level, you’ll have been playing for at least one year with regular harp lessons, and be able to play a simple song with left hand. We will split into two groups, one working steadily to build confidence, the second working at a faster pace to suit more able students who want more of a challenge.

The Team
Merit Zloch is a harpist, composer and music teacher. She sees herself in the tradition of the itinerant harp players of the 19th and early 20th century, travelling with her harp throughout Europe charming people with her original compositions and arrangements of historical dance music. She has played in bands almost as long as she has played the harp and is constantly fascinated by the interplay between musicians. She likes to arrange and develop pieces together with her band colleagues and to improvise. Merit researches historical dance manuscripts and organises musicians’ meetings, bals and instrumental workshop weekends. |

Birmingham Conservatoire duo Cherry Stone Duo have released a CD
As students of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Will and Emily formed the Cherry Stone Duo in their first year and have been playing together ever since. They deliver an original and innovative sound aiming to explore the potential these two instruments can create together and share this rare chamber ensemble with audiences everywhere.
Both being keen to experiment with different genres they spend time exploring styles and creating new music; playing their own arrangements of house and pop songs as well as performing jazz numbers. Having spent many hours searching for music composed specifically for the harp and guitar, they now have a large repertoire consisting of light classical and romantic pieces. The Cherry Stone Duo regularly perform in different venues across Birmingham such as The Museum and Arts Gallery, The ICC and Birmingham Central Synagogue. In Summer 2018 the Duet won the annual Henrietta Renié Harp and Chamber Prize. They have just released their first album named ‘A Dance of Mermaids’ which is available on all major streaming sites including iTunes, Spotify, amazon music and google play. Thank you to Erik Marchelie, Kelly Greenwell and Tom William, without whom this album would not have been possible. |

The British Isles Music Festival
The British Isles Music Festival is a unique, residential chamber music and master class course, which celebrates the emergence of outstanding young musicians throughout the world. It unites young people through the common language of music and gives them the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience, learn from each other and learn from some of the top teachers and performers in the UK and Europe. During the festival they study in masterclass and individually with established professors, rehearse under supervision and perform major works in high level concerts to the general public and to their peers and professors. This is enormously beneficial to the many students who do not have the opportunity to work and perform on a more professional level. This experience is a much needed bridge between conservatory and professional life.

Lucy Wakeford harp
The musicians of Sound Collective look to the Irish Easter Rising in this programme of music for flute, viola and harp. Debussy's magical Trio Sonata from 1916 will be heard alongside Arnold Bax's Elegiac Trio from the same year. Irish tributes come from Hamilton Harty, Hilary Tan's celtic-influenced Song of Amergin and traditional Irish tunes such as Danny Boy and Down by the Salley Gardens. Irish composer Alan Mills has written a poetic new work for the occasion: Autumnal Variation, based on an old Irish harp melody collected by his ancestor Edward Bunting in 1792.
