Edinburgh Harp Festival |
When we formed our harp-making business in 1980, one of our first decisions was the creation of a harp festival. We wanted it to provide a taste into the diverse world of harps and so we approached other harp makers to join with us in an exhibition of many harps under one roof. We organised harp workshops to show how anyone can learn how to play a harp or help students improve their existing technique. We organised evening concerts at venues around Edinburgh and thus the Edinburgh International Harp Festival was born.
It proved an instant success; rapidly taking on a life and momentum of its own. After just a few years we realised that we had something very special in our hands but also we knew we had a difficult decision to make. As the festival had grown so quickly, we knew that to stick with our first love as harp makers we could be in danger of holding back, both the festivals’ progress and our own development, so we handed over the reigns to the Clarsach Society who have organised it so superbly ever since. So what is it that makes the Edinburgh International Harp Festival so special? Well, ‘International’ is a very important part of the name and we applaud the way that the Clarsach Society has continued so successfully in attracting celebrated harpists from many countries and cultures and in building upon the original 'world of harps' idea. Another factor is the steady increase of interest in harps that we have witnessed over the many years since we started back in 1980. Thus each spring, this annual festival attracts a wide audience to hear the finest players, attend fantastic workshops and see exhibitions demonstrating how harps are made. There really is, something to cater to all ages and abilities. Experience world class performance, learn new skills and join the growing harp community... |

Christmas Video Charity Campaign mention in
Harp Column Magazine
Pilgrim Harps is inviting harpists to share videos and donate to cancer research.Peter Ian Cunningham, a founder and director at Pilgrim Harps, died in November, 2016.
Want to show your harp stuff and help a good cause at the same time? South-east England based Pilgrim Harps is sponsoring a video campaign to raise money for cancer research in memory of their founder and director Peter Ian Cunningham, who passed away in Nov., 2016. Pilgrim’s resident harpist Fran Barsby (above) came up with the idea to ask harpists to post videos of themselves playing their favorite Christmas song and then donate to cancer research. “It is devastating that most people have someone in their lives right now sufferings from this horrible disease,” says Barsby. “It does not discriminate, it does not go easy on anyone, it destroys lives. We are proud to be supporting and fighting in memory of our friend and colleague, who was one of the most glorious human beings on this planet.” How to get involved:

Tom Monger and the Malvern Wave - MAGNERS ADVERT
MAY 2016
|
Tom Monger, harpist for Florence and the Machine, borrowed our brand new Malvern Wave recently for the new Magner's Cider promotion. The promotion is all about keeping true to who you are and not changing. Our harps evolve throughout the ages but they will always be built with love, passion and a unique sound that you can only get from a perfectionist approach to wood and carpentry.
At around 40 seconds in the video you see Tom and the Malvern Wave. Enjoy and share! Have a go on one of our harps and begin your adventure and find your passion. Hold true to whatever makes you YOU everyone x |

The Malvern Wave Premiere
“The Electro-Malvern is beautifully designed and very satisfying to play. It has a beautiful rich tone both acoustically and amplified and I would recommend it to anyone who wants the best of both worlds.” Acoustically this harp has a truly beautiful sound, clear in the base and very sonorous in the upper octaves. Played with electric it has an even amplified tone throughout the whole 47 string range. This harp sounds brilliant amplified and loses nothing acoustically! I feel so grateful to live at a time when the development of new harps with incredible sound and capabilities is striding forwards all the time. Thank you to all the builders in this amazing renaissance, I am so happy to be getting to be part of it as a harp player and teacher!” |
This harp features all the legendary attributes that you would expect from our original harps but with the addition of a special new pick-up system. This system retains the full integrity of tone and evenness throughout the range. Convenient to use, it can provide anything from a little sound enhancement to full volume amplification.
By using the Accusound “continuous pickup technology”, the whole sound of the instrument is collected as opposed to the individual sounds of the strings. This, we believe, adds a lot of warmth and maintains the acoustic characteristic of the harp, allowing the strings to interact with each other and with the structure of the instrument. The “continuous pickup technology” also ensures an even pickup of sound throughout the instrument without the need to electronically interfere with the signal to balance the musical sound. Being built in to the fundamental heart of the instrument, the total sound of the harp is captured, from the feel of the strings to the resonances of the wood. The electronics of the system is located as close as possible to the active transducer material to ensure accurate and reliable transmission to the amplifier. The low impedance output of the Accusound preamplifier forms a perfect connection to the vast majority of amplifiers using an industry standard ¼” jack lead. |

Hidden Gem ConcertA fantastic new project showcasing new works by composers from across the UK. Come and see 7 harpists including Eleanor Turner, Fran Barsby, Vera Khait, Rita Schindler, Kinga Was, Amy Turk and Erica Sinclair perform brand new works by Kirsty Devaney, Leon Haxby, Ryan Probert, Sam James, Patrick Ellis, Rob Jones, Ben Parkinson-Atherton, Dominic Sewell, Ben Weatherill and Yfat Soul Zisso.
The "Future Blend" project was inspired to bring together composers and harpists. Becoming established in the music industry is becoming increasingly more difficult and this project helps to act as a stepping stone for musicians and composers. The project also looks to help increase the amount of music composed for the harp. |
